Hi and welcome to our Blog.
We’re John and Tania and in 2007 we took a decision to move to Hampshire in a bid to live a more sustainable lifestyle and to take some of the stress out of our lives.
We found a plot on the Hampshire/Wiltshire border, on which we built our family home, which we call Blackbirds.
Our garden is approximately 1/4 of an acre on which we keep chickens for the eggs, grow our own fruit and vegetables and raise our own plants.
At the centre of our philosophy is a real determination to grow and eat healthy, organic fruit and vegetables based on the seasons and not simply accept it can be bought off the supermarket shelf 52 weeks of the year.
Both John and I like to cook, which is just a joy when you have a fresh supply of healthy organic produce that’s traveled no further than 50 yards from your back door. We also have a modest Polytunnel that extends our growing season and means we can grow a few exotic goodies!
Having made our first few steps into self sufficiency in the last 3 years we now want to go further and have started looking at alternative energy sources. We already collect our own rainwater and use solar thermal panels to heat our water, but we we’re starting to looking into generating our own electricity and finding ways to reduce our reliance on the grid.
We’d like to share our experiences so others may benefit from what we’ve learned along the way, so do come back and see us again soon.
Wishing you every health and happiness for 2013.
John & Tania.
