As we have quite a large kitchen garden we are bound to produce a fair bit of waste product. So what we need is good size compost heap. The structure is pretty simple .. basically a box made up of 4 posts and a few feather boards. I like to leave a reasonable space between the boards so the air can circulate which aids the composting process.
We throw pretty much everything onto the heap with the exception of cooked food. As we are in the country cooked food on a compost heap will attract rats. If there’s one thing in the world I hate it’s rats!
If you only chuck waste veg onto your heap the compost will most likely be slimy and way too rich in nitrogen. To avoid this we add cardboard and straw to boost up the carbon content. We also add a thin layer of well rotted horse manure to introduce the bacteria and compost generators.
Now all we need to do is keep layering it up and turning it from time to time and next Spring we should have a plentiful supply of garden compost. Time will tell.
